New Blood

There are changes afoot at the Lincoln County Record.

After 27 years at the helm of Nevada’s third-oldest newspaper, Connie Simkins has retired from the publishing business to take a new job with the county.

You just can’t replace that kind of knowledge and experience overnight, particularly her intimate understanding of the various political and social dynamics in the community.

She will be sorely missed both by the Record and the people she has been educating and informing for nearly three decades.

However, the tradition that is the Lincoln County Record, which has been publishing since 1879, must go on.

The Thompson family, who has owned the paper since 1979, recognizes their responsibility to keep the news coming every Thursday.

That is why they hired the Mesquite Media Group to operate the newspaper beginning Jan. 1.

While it may seem odd for a company from another area to run Lincoln County’s main source of local news, it is actually a natural fit.

Like the Record, we are a small company dedicated to the truth, not a large multi-million dollar conglomerate looking to pad their profit margin.

We respect the longstanding tradition of this 136-year-old institution, and feel honored to carry it into the 21st century.

While it will take time for us to learn our way around the towns and develop your trust, there are a few things we can promise now.

First, we are passionate about bringing local news to you, not rehashed wire stories or sanitized spin from some public relations firm.

Our focus will be Lincoln County, finding and telling the truth about the things which are important to you.

This means that we will sometimes step on toes, occasionally rock the boat, and even tick you off once in a while.

But mostly, we hope to make you think, and provide you the information needed to make decisions about your community.

At the same time, we hope to inform and entertain.

One of the things we look forward to is the opportunity to see Lincoln County with “fresh eyes,” reporting on things that you may have known but forgotten, or providing a different perspective.

During the next few weeks, we want to hear from you.

Please call or e-mail us at lincorecord@yahoo.com with your suggestions and ideas.

After all, we want this to be YOUR newspaper.

Also, we ask for your patience.

We’re not always going to get it right in the beginning, whether it’s a botched ad, a missed classified, or the spelling of someone’s name.

But we promise to work hard to make it right, and to create a newspaper you will be proud to call your own.

The logo on the front of this newspaper is an eagle in flight.

Please join us as we attempt to soar even higher.
