Lincoln Teams Split with Moapa Valley
By Dave Maxwell
Although one team was at home and the other on the road, the result was the same: a split decision with non-league opponent Moapa Valley.
The Lynx boys were at home and broke open a close game in the third quarter for an 80-66 win over Moapa Valley. Dantley Walker and Chris Shinkle both scored over 20 points each. Walker had 27 and Shinkle 22. Chris Bernal scored 10 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Lynx. After nursing only a two-point halftime lead, Lincoln cranked up both their defense and offense and spun out to a commanding lead in the third quarter and won going away.
Lincoln (12-5) faces the top two teams in the 2A Southern league this Friday and Saturday hosting Needles (12-2) and The Meadows (8-14). Needles lost to The Meadows 60-57 on January 8, but edged West Wendover 62-59 on January 11. Darra Russell, of Needles, MVP of the Mustangs state football championship team, is one of the top scorer’s in the state, averaging 22.5 points per game (ppg).
The Meadows is the four-time defending 2A state champion and has beaten Lincoln in the state finals two out of the past three years.
Updating some of the boys’ scores from over the Christmas holidays at the Moapa Tournament December 27-29. A 30-point effort by Dantley Walker helped the Lynx hang right with Silverado, a 4A school from Las Vegas, and Chris Shinkle added 14 points, but Lincoln lost 78-77.
Walker then poured in 28 points in a 94-91 hard fought loss to Del Sol, another Vegas 4A school. Kevin Hannig had 22 points and Chris Shinkle added 20. Walker was named to the All-Tournament team. Lincoln did beat Tonopah at the Moapa Tourney 64-22.
Against White Pine in Ely on January 5, Walker had 31 points leading the Lynx to a 74-62 win over the Bobcats. Chris Bernal had 15 points.
