Freshman Cody Hosier’s 23 points led all scorers and paced the 7th ranked 1A Panthers to a 51-47 non-league win over the 8th ranked 3A Pahrump Trojans January 16 in Alamo.
The Panthers scrappy defense held the Trojans to only six points in the third quarter while opening up a lead they never relinquished. Hosier had a big fourth quarter to keep PVHS on top. He nailed three three-pointers and was 8 for 10 at the free throw line.
Coach Brian Higbee said he felt the Panthers are a better team than Pahrump, at least right now in the season. He said Hosier “really showed his confidence with the ball and did a nice job.”
Alamo’s zone defense in the fourth quarter kept the Trojans from getting the ball inside to their big men for the easy lay-up and forced them to shoot from long range, which Coach Bret Hart said is not their style. “We didn’t have any outside shooters, so all they need to do is zone us, he said.” Pahrump’s two best shooters did not make the trip due to grades and team discipline.
Brady Whipple had 14 points along with 10 rebounds for the Panthers. Pahrump’s leading scorer was Daveon Fisher with 10.
In league play the weekend of January 18-19, the Alamo boys were on both ends of scores that looked pretty much the same. First, they handled Laughlin 73-42, but the next night were losers at Lake Mead 77-43. Landon Littlefield scored 22 points, Demetrius Turner 18, and Diontea Wright 14 for the Crusaders.
PVHS (14-5) play their remaining four league games on the road beginning with Calvary Chapel and Mountain View (9-12), both in Las Vegas January 25-26.
