Lincoln County District Attorney, Greg Barlow, acknowledged to The Lincoln County RECORD that a report regarding the shootings, last November, of three horses, owned by Steve Culverwell of Caliente, had been submitted to his office by the Sheriff’s Department and that no decision on the matter had been made.
When asked if he would provide the RECORD with a copy of the report, he declined. Also declining to release the name of the person who shot the horses, stating he did not conduct cases in the press. The horses were all shot the night before Thanksgiving of last year.
Culverwell reported that two of the three horses either died, or had to be destroyed, because of the severity of their wounds. A third horse survived its injuries. Culverwell refused to press charges and was unwilling to give the name of the person responsible for the shootings, but did point out that restitution was being made.
Some controversy on exactly where the shootings took place, whether in, or out of, City limits is undetermined but was being considered by local authorities.
Lincoln County Sheriff, Kerry Lee, considers the matter closed but did want it known that Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff, Chase Dirks, who lives in close proximity to where the shootings took place, is not the person who shot the horses, as had been rumored.
