PVHS wrestlers earning Number 1 seeds for the A/2A Southern Region Tournament February 1-2 in Alamo were Trey Turley, 103-lbs; Jenson Jones, 112-lbs; Roy Lasike, 119-lbs; Dane Mulliner, 125-lbs; and Ike Spencer, 189-lbs. Those earning the Number 2 seed were Nathan Whipple, 160-lbs, and Cory Shumway, 275-lbs.
Lincoln County seeded three men into the Southern League championships. Coach Mason Stackhouse said Mauri Escobedo is a Number 2 seed in the 112-lbs. class, Zack Hunt, Number one at 130-lbs, and Matt Jones is a Number 2 seed at 140-lbs.
Stackhouse said at the league duals the Lincoln team beat Laughlin 45-18; beat Lund 54-0; lost to The Meadows 16-40; lost to Spring Mountain 35-38; lost to Pahranagat Valley 6-66; lost to Indian Springs 39-42; beat West Wendover 30-24; lost to White Pine 30-34; and beat Tonopah 48-30.
PVHS Coach Brad Loveday said he is excited about being selected as the host for the 10-team Southern League championships. “This is the first time the NIAA has been willing to allow us to do this,” he said. “With the addition of Windmill Ridge, all three of the local motels are working with us to reserve rooms for the teams so we can host it.”
Loveday said the tournament schedule will have the first three rounds, up through the semi-finals, on Friday. The consolation matches will be held Saturday morning and the championship finals Saturday afternoon. Loveday said for the finals there will be just one center mat using two officials. “Each man will be introduced. Makes it kind of special for the kids,” he said.
“It’s nice to be able to have the tournament here this year,” Loveday said, “because we have a legitimate chance to win it and maybe send 7-8 kids to state.”
The top four wrestlers in each class will qualify the A/2A State Tournament to be held in Laughlin February 8-9.
