Carol Gertrude Force Getker
Carol Gertrude Force Getker was born February 27, 1910 in Garden City,
Kansas. She was the second youngest of nine children, six older
brothers and two sisters. She and her younger sister, Ruby, grew up in
Scott City, Kansas except for three years in Utah. She, her parents
and some of her family moved to Modena/Hamblin Valley, Utah in 1920 to
homestead. The first year out here she went to school in Cedar City,
Utah and the next two years were in Salt Lake City, Utah. She became
ill so her parents, sister and she moved back to Scott City, Kansas.
Her illness kept her out of school for one year-but she rallied back
and finished school. She was a natural for playing basketball for
Scott City High School. She went to St. Louis, Missouri after
completing High School, then back to Scott City, Kansas. Her sister,
Ruby, got married so Carol and her parents came out to Modena, Utah
with Ruby and her new husband on their honeymoon to be with her
brother Alfred and his family. She met Bill Getker at this time, but
went on to Los Angeles and San Francisco, California and lived a short
time with her other brother Jim and his wife. She came back to Modena,
Utah and married Bill on June 1, 1936 and lived at their ranch,
Crestline, Nevada. A daughter, Sarah Katherine (Pete) was born to
them. They moved to Panaca, Nevada in 1943 so Pete could go to school.
Carol worked at the Panaca Merc for a few years then went to work at
the United States Post Office until she retired in 1972. She became a
widow in 1987. She was President and active member of BPW (Business
Professional Women)-GOC (Ground Observer Corp) -President of Panaca
Grade School PTA (Parents Teachers Association) and Knitting Club. She
was always there for the LDS Church though she was not a member at
that time. On August 10, 1991, she was baptized and confirmed into the
LDS Church. She has been in Kolob Care Center in Cedar City, Utah
since November 3, 2005. Carol is survived by one daughter, Sarah
Katherine (Pete) Getker of Panaca, Nevada, 95 year old sister, Ruby
Rodenbeek of Scott City, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews. People
will miss her fun sense of humor. She was well loved.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 11:00
a.m. at the Panaca City Cemetery. Arrangements are made by the
Southern Utah Mortuary in Cedar City, Utah. On-line condolences can
