Family Dollar Store Planned for Caliente

A Family Dollar Store is being planned for the vacant lot next to the LDS church in Caliente. On April 3, the developer came before the Caliente City Council with a request to consider abandoning a portion of Third Street to allow an access area for trucks delivering materials to the store.

Family Dollar Stores is a $6 billion company based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Currently they operate 6,500 cash-and-carry discount stores nationwide (with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska) focusing primarily on low and middle-income neighborhoods and communities.

Council members referred the matter to the City Planning Commission as they felt there are certain concerns the Planning Commission needed to work with first. Councilman Ashley Moore said, “there are utility issues there we have to look at before we can really make a good judgment call.”
