Obituary Notice
for
Francis Andrew Lytle
October 17, 1939 - August 1, 2007

Francis Andrew Lytle, 67, passed away August 1, 2007, in Caliente, NV. He was born October 17, 1939 to Andrew Robert and Anna Fern Bowler Lytle. He was the second child of five. He spent most of his childhood living in the Mountain Meadows and then Central, Utah. They moved to St. George, Utah when he was old enough to go to school. He had a normal childhood going to school and helping with the chores. He broke his arm in the first grade by jumping out of a swing. In Jr. High and High School he always got out of school two to three days early in the spring to move cows from Tule to Clover Valley. It was the one thing he looked forward to every year. In high school he competed in track until injury side lined him. He ran the mile in almost 4:00 minutes. He also competed in F.F.A. and in F.F.A. speech contests. His talk on soil conservation won him a first on the local level and third at the state contest.
He married Linda Kay Atkin on November 23, 1956. They had four children: Andrew Francis; William Earl (Billy); Cory David; and Lisa Ann. The first ten years of their married life they worked together on ranches in Nevada, construction and worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Clark County, Nevada. Then he moved to Oregon. He then spent three years running and training race horses in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. These were good years and he loved running horses. He trained the top three year old in the state of Oregon and was leading trainer at Colfax, Washington; Redman, California; Primeville, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, and Portland Oregon. One year he was kicked by a colt which broke his ankle so he had training that year in a full light cast. While he was in California he was kidnapped and held hostage at gun point for 72 hours. This was an exciting time in his life. When they opened Dixie Downs in St. George, Utah he decided to go home and run horses. The first year at Dixie Downs he won the the two year futurity, but with no pari-mutual betting there was no purses in Utah. So he went to work for Bloomington Country Club managing the stables. Then he bought into the ranch at Clover Valley and Tule, Nevada with his dad. In 1973 his dad sold out and he bought the ranch and ran cows with his family and the Lavar and Kay Wade family. With the help of his boys he ran the stables and the ranch until 1979. He then went to work at the Pepper Mill working security and still running the ranch. He enjoyed helping with the kids, rodeo and put on the Jr Rodeo for the kids of Southern Utah.
Francis was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in 1990. On April 29, 1991 he divorced Linda and then married Michelle Jensen. They divorced in 1992. He married Tyra Perkins June 9, 1992. It was a package deal that came with three teenagers: Theresa, Veronica and Robert. They lived in St. George and Francis continued to work at the Oasis Casino in Mesquite and ranch. As his health began to decline it became necessary for him to leave his position at the Oasis.
He and Tyra moved to Lincoln County. Francis focused on his dream of clearing the debt on the ranch that had been in his family for three generations. His ultimate goal was to run it with his children. When he realized that his health would not permit him to participate, he sold part of the ranch for clear title, part for medical expenses and gifted his remaining interest to Linda and their children.
Francis continued to pursue his passion for quality horses. He bred for performance and ability. Some of his accomplishments include breeding the 2000 AQHA high school rodeo horse of the year which his granddaughter, Jenny, also won all-around on, rope and arena horses that his grandsons: Ace, Ryan, and Wyatt, have ridden to the Junior High Rodeo National Finals and High School Semi Finals and several show horses that have placed in their 2006-07 individual classes and made the final cut in the Reserve and Champion rounds of the Ely shows. His passion for the new foals every season kept his desire for living strong.
Francis loved his horses, especially when his kids and grandkids were competing with them. He was always willing to offer them advice, guidance and encouragement. He never missed a chance to talk bloodlines and horses. Francis never let his disease dim his desire to enjoy every moment he had here. He enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and they loved every grumpy moment with him.
He is survived by his wife, Tyra Perkins Lytle of Caliente, 4 children: Andrew (Laura) of St. George, UT; Billy (Erin) of Leeds, UT; Cory (Patrice) of Caliente, NV; Lisa (Kevin) Anderson of Annabella, UT and three stepchildren: Theresa (Shaun) Stout of Delta, UT; Veronica (Josh) Lawrence of Caliente, NV; and Robert (Sarah) Mora of St. George, UT; 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also, brothers and sisters are: Robert (Suzy) Lytle of Enterprise, UT; SueAnn Guido of St. George, UT; George (Joan) Lytle of Spokane, WA; Debra Lynn (Lyman) Evertt of Virgin, UT.
Francis was preceded in death by his parents.
We find comfort in knowing that Francis is now breathing freely and spending his days deciding which horse to saddle up.
Funeral services were held August 4, 2007 at Caliente LDS Church with internment at the Barclay Cemetery, Barclay, Nevada.
