Groundshakers Independence Hare Scrambles
Submitted by Lynn Jackson
The Groundshakers will be holding their 23rd annual Motorcycle race on July 4th and 5th. Three races will be held. The big bike race will start at 8:00 am Saturday morning, on Clover Street in front of the grocery store. Followed by the 65cc Novice and 50cc race held at the rodeo grounds at 6:30pm. On Sunday, the 65cc Expert, Amateurs, and 85cc race will be held at 10:00am 10 miles off Highway 93 on the Beaver Dam road.
As stated above, this is the 23rd year the Groundshakers have held this event. However the race was first put on by Fred Hansen and the "Chargers West Motorcycle Club" in 1974. The Caliente Volunteer Fire Dept. helped co-sponsor the first few races and have continued to help out through the years. The Chargers West always made a cash donation to the Fire Dept. for their help. The Groundshakers have continued to make donations after each event, but have spread it out to several organizations such as the Rodeo club, the Parks and Recreation, CVFD, etc.
Several local riders have signed up for this year's event. They are: Dave Pearson #31, Justin Wallis #907F, Cody Wallis # 441, Bret Barnes #24, Miguel Gonzales #4X, Rick Zabriskie #13S, Todd Parker #6S, Brandon Curtis #14A, Tammie Gubler #95W, Colton Gubler #214, Eian Acklin #85Y, Gunner Cardinal #11K, Curtis Bradley#611, Damon Livreri, Cody Livreri #523P and Cody Knott #46Y.
Many legendary riders started off their careers by winning this race, including Casey Folks, Jack Johnson, Scott Harden, and Danny Hammel.
Saturday's morning race will utilize Clover Street from Gottfredson's to Hwy 317. A flagman will be stationed at all intersections and local traffic will need to follow their directions for the safety of all concerned. The race course is 41 miles long and each rider will do 2 laps. The road should be reopened by 12:00pm.
The Groundshakers have laid out a challenging and exciting race course. Many stories will be told after the dust settles. No one article could include all of the accomplishments of these racers. Take time to shake their hand and listen to a story or two. For more information go to www.mranracing.com.
