Wade Wins at Brawley Cattle Call Rodeo
By Dave Maxwell
Jake Wade of Alamo, Nevada, won the fan-favorite bull-riding event at the annual Cattle Call Rodeo in Brawley, California last weekend. The Cattle Call is one of the last rodeos of the 2009 season and actually counts for points earned in the 2010 season. Wade won with a score of 82 points riding The Liberator to take home $1,504.
Jake, son of Gary and Roxie Wade of Alamo, is a 2001 graduate of Pahranagat Valley High School where he played varsity football and basketball. He was the 2001 Nevada State Bull Riding Champion and placed fourth that year at the National High School Finals Rodeo.
Wade, 26, was a member of the 2006 UNLV rodeo team and was featured as the cover story of the December 2006 issue of Las Vegas Sports Magazine. He said at the time, the reason he chose UNLV was because it had a bull riding team. He later earned his Associate's Degree from the College of Southern Nevada.
Wade's two cousins, Kyla Wade Schuknecht, of Buhl, Idaho, and Mica Wade of Elko, also graduates of Pahranagat Valley, both went to National American University in Rapid City, South Dakota in order to compete on the Women's Rodeo Team. Mica later was a member of the women's team at Black Hills State in Spearfish, SD.
Jake said 2009 was not a good year for him on the PRCA Xtreme Bull Riding Event. He went to about 80 rodeos, but did not fare that well. "I probably rode less than half," although he thinks he is in the top 30 riders. "I had some high points, but over all, I kind of just stayed the same this year," he said. However, he wants to continue on the tour as long as he can make some money. "It's the adrenaline rush. This year I was kind of up and down, kind of streaky. I'd do really good for awhile and then not do good for awhile, so it kind of evened out."
Wade said the usual age for bull riders is just during their 20s. Most will retire after getting into their 30s and go on to some other career. It might be in rodeo, or might not be. "Although, there are some guys still riding in their late 30s," he said.
Wade not injured much during the season, except for a few minor muscle pulls from time to time. He said he did tear his MCL once this season.
The first 2010 rodeo Wade said he plans to attend will likely be the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver in early January.
