BLM Expected to approve Parks and Recreation Plan in Alamo

By Dave Maxwell

With the expected approval of architect plans for the Parks and Recreation project in Alamo, bids could go out for construction possibly by next week. Phyllis Robistow, Lincoln County Grant Administrator, reported at the Alamo Town Board meeting Tuesday night, that $2.5 million from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) project can be used to construct new rodeo grounds, a softball field and then build the Alamo Children’s park in Yoppsville.

Board Chairman Lonnie Walch commented that it has been over a year that the town has hired Leslie and Associates, an engineering firm from Cedar City, to do the plans. Ms. Robistow said she has been working with SNPLMA to secure grant money for the projects since 2004. Walch presented the architect drawings at the meeting, which show that in the fairgrounds area, the existing rodeo arena will be removed, and replaced by a new softball field. A very nice children’s park will also be built in Alamo at the east end of Danielle and Theresa Avenue, a neighborhood commonly referred to as Yoppsville.

The new softball field will be where the rodeo arena is now. When completed it will allow two softball games or Little League games to be held at the same time. A new rodeo arena and practice arena will be moved a little to the west, more particularly, where the high school usually holds their homecoming bonfire.

Twenty-one RV spaces will be constructed with water and electrical hookups and can be expanded to hold 70 or 80 vehicles. Near the arena will be stalls for horses. A grandstand with 720-capacity seating will be constructed at the south end. Large restroom facilities will be built and a large fully equipped concession stand. Board members emphasized the plan is to hire one construction company to work on both parks simultaneously to avoid delays and confusion and the work should be completed by next April.

The Children’s Park, at the east end of Danielle Lane and Theresa Street, will feature a T-ball and soccer field, a volleyball court, a paved parking area, playground areas featuring playground sand, a water feature that has water jets which pop up intermittently creating a shallow puddle of water, playground equipment for both big and little kids, covered picnic areas, landscaping, restroom facilities, a maintenance shed, lighting for night time use and a number of other features.
