PVHS Girls End Lake Mead Win Streak

By Dave Maxwell

Playing their best game of the year, Pahranagat Valley gained sole possession of the girls' 1A Southern league with a convincing 59-38 win over visiting Lake Mead January 26. The Lady Panthers bolted out to a 20-7 first quarter lead, and kept it up, handing the Eagles their first league loss, and snapping their 16-game win streak.

Panther Coach Amy Huntsman said, "I knew we had the potential and it's just whether or not we can put it all together, and hopefully right now, we're starting to get each puzzle piece in place and we can just continue to get better."

Eagles first-year coach Derek Anderson said he knew PVHS was a good team coming in. "We knew we were going to have to play our best game to beat them. The first quarter really hurt us, they got up and out early. With our youth, (three seniors and nine freshman and sophomores) we did not do a very good job handling that. We played them pretty even after the first quarter, but that first quarter really hurt us a lot."

Huntsman said of the first quarter, "It's the same thing we've been doing all along, it's just that the shots were falling tonight. Addie took some outside shots, and opened up the game inside for us, and I thought they played really well as a team."

Pahranagat Valley had expected a lot of pressure from Lake Mead that didn't come and were able to concentrate on their defense.

Anderson said that defense contributed a lot to why his team did not shoot very well during the game. "They didn't give us a lot of clean looks, especially the kids we typically get the ball to. They did a real nice job."

Huntsman said, "I really credit that to the girls. We did a lot of motivational talking, but it really comes down to whether or not they want to play, and the rivalry was Lake Mead. They are a great team, number 2 in the conference right now, and the (Vegas) newspapers have been talking about how they are going to win it, so those things are good for us, and the girls decided they wanted to play and to step it up."

PVHS led 33-13 at halftime, faltered in the third quarter, when Lake Mead closed within nine points. However, the Panther girls stepped it up in the fourth quarter with a fundamental man-to-man defense, a mindset to get more scoring, and outdid the Eagles 21-10, to win going away.

Anderson said his team had spent so much energy catching up in the third quarter, "We didn't have anything left in the tank for the fourth quarter."

Taylor Badua-Kono paced the Eagles (17-2, 5-1) with 10 points.
