Panthers Race Past Tonopah

Like two boxers feeling each other out, the teams stayed close in the first quarter, with Tonopah on top 14-13.

However, Coach Brian Higbee threw on an aggressive full court press in the second and third quarter, creating numerous turnovers and points per possession, and the Panthers went on a 41-11 run during that time.

Denver Otteson led Tonopah (6-10, 3-4) with 10 points.

Higbee said, "We really believed we had the ability to press these guys, and the kids did come out real aggressive and really kind of set a tone from the beginning of the game. We were getting turnovers that eventually led to a big run right after the half (17-0)," until Tonopah scored a basket with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

"We wanted to make these guys get into a real hurry up game. When we started, we weren't doing that. We weren't pushing the ball, and felt that if we sped the pace up to where we wanted it, then we figured we'd have a chance to put some points up on the board.  The kids did a nice job defensively, hurrying them up, getting them out of their 2-3 zone. We've got to get up and down the floor, that's our game."

Alamo (13-9, 4-2) had good balanced scoring from other members of the team and Higbee said, "That's where we want to be. You have to have balanced scoring in this league because there are some teams that can put some points up against you, and that's what we're looking for."

Sitting now in third place, the Panthers have a very important game this Thursday at Spring Mountain (8-11, 4-3). It's a must win for PVHS in order to keep hold of the #3 spot going into the league playoffs.  The third seed keeps them out of the same bracket as Lake Mead until the regional finals.
