Alamo Girls Crush Tonopah
By Dave Maxwell
At Alamo, Dakota Day had 13 points and 12 rebounds to help the Panthers roll past Tonopah 46-16 Friday. Halie Lewis added nine points and 12 rebounds for PVHS, which took control by outscoring Tonopah 12-2 in the second quarter.
Coach Amy Huntsman said her team struggled in the first half, leading only 19-6, but the three-quarter court press really turned things around in the third quarter. “In the first half we weren’t scoring well. We weren’t able to finish. We had a lot of looks, the ball just wasn’t going through the basket.”
Huntsman said she was pleased with Tonopah’s tough defense. “I’m really glad they pressured Alyssa at the end, and pressured us and made us break the press, because that’s really good practice for us. That will help us down the road.” She did not say PVHS is peaking yet, but rather, “I would like to think that we are improving. Hopefully we are not going to peak for another week or so. Absolutely we are getting better, but I know that we have some improvements as well, so that’s exciting for me.”
Tonopah’s coach said PVHS had "size, aggressiveness, and just outhustled us.”
The Panther press caused problems for Tonopah and the coach said his girls, “kept the ball on one side of the floor instead of utilizing the whole floor to move the ball around. Something for us to work on in the future.” In addition, he said, with Alamo’s team being much larger than Tonopah, “Our girls just had a tough time getting the ball to the hoop.”
