02-04-2010 Basketball Throwback Night At PVHS

Basketball Throwback Night At PVHS

By Dave Maxwell

Pahranagat Valley's last regular season home game this season will be Thursday, February 11 in the old gym. Note the change of location: THE OLD GYM. The Panther Booster Club is calling it "Throwback Night."

It will feature the Alamo teams in the old uniforms, if any can be found from a given year. How about the `40s!  Admission prices and concession prices will be rolled back. Everyone is encouraged to bring your school jacket or sweater, any school, and get a free T-shirt. There will be lots of fun and food, old-fashioned root beer floats, etc. Talk with friends about the old days and some of those stories you remember (true or not).

Bonnie Poulsen of the Booster Club said it's just going to be a fun time, "We're not going to make any money off it."

"There will be team pictures from past Pahranagat Valley yearbooks along the walls in the old gym, and those go back to 1938," she said. "We're taking anybody that is living here, and is a graduate of PVHS, and putting up their senior pictures. We've got the Rockin' 50s tablecloth, some fun half-time activities, and more."

Athletic Director Brad Loveday said, "The kids are excited about playing in the old gym and wearing the old uniforms (with the short pants). The coaches think it's a great idea, too. It should be a really fun night."

He thought the last complete set of uniforms still remaining is from the late 1980s. "Not only are the pants shorter, but the colors are a little different, too," he said. Player's numbers may have to be changed on the roster for that one day only, but Loveday didn't think the NIAA would mind, for just one special occasion.

The floor in the old gym has been resurfaced and is in great shape, Loveday said. Site of many, many exciting games, the old gym served from 1959 to 2005. The old wooden state championship trophy plaques are still in place also.

Poulsen did not know if the today's cheerleaders would wear cheer outfits from years gone by. "I don't know if they can even find them," she said.

The game had originally been set for February 12, but with Pahranagat Valley hosting the 2A Southern Regional Wrestling tournament beginning the same day, it was decided to move the basketball games to February 11 in the old gym, allowing the wrestling team adequate time to prepare the main gym.

The games, with Indian Springs, will be varsity girls and boys only, at 4 and 5:30 pm.
