Cody Hosier hit two free throws to start the second overtime, and Pahranagat Valley held on for a 62-59 win over Mineral County in a 1A state semifinal game Friday at North Valley’s High School in Reno.

Hosier led the Panthers with 26 points, including six 3-pointers.  Jeremy Roemer added 13 and Tommy Williams tallied 12 for the No. 2 seed from the South.

Kade Wadsworth tacked on a couple more free throws and Tyler Higbee hit one also in the second extra period, and the Panthers survived a last second three-point attempt by Mineral County’s Tremaine Young.

Mineral County came back from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then forced a second extra period on a three-point shot by Logan Espinoza with about four seconds left.

“We lost some guys defensively (at the end of regulation) and they hit some big ones, but that’s what good teams do,” said Panther Coach Brian Higbee.

Trailing 43-34 late in the game, Mineral County’s Espinoza and Anthony Gattrell each nailed long shots and Brandon Jackson had two key short ones as the Serpents made their run to tie the game at 48 on a pair of free throws by Gattrell, who led all scorers with 27 points.

Hosier could not get a shot off for the Panthers at the end of regulation. However, PVHS never trailed in either overtime and capped it off by making 5 of 6 free throws in the second overtime session. “We just had to continue to be aggressive to the basket,” Higbee said. “You kind of want to pull the ball out and take care of it, but then you start getting a little tentative, and we wanted to continue to push the ball at the rim and go at ‘em. I think our kids did a pretty nice job and we hit enough free throws to get the job done.”

The Serpents had a chance with about 20 seconds left to force a third overtime, but could not find an open shot.

Brandon Jackson had 14 points for Mineral County.
