Lincoln Boys Fall to Incline in 2A Title Game

By Dave Maxwell

Dantley Walker tried to carry Lincoln County to the boys 2A State title, but going up the Incline was just too steep. The junior guard had 41 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, but Incline proved very strong throughout their own lineup, and defeated the Lynx 71-64 at Lawler Events Center in Reno.

Josh Dykstra scored 19 points, Micha Cornell had 18, and Sam Witt tallied 14 for Incline (26-3), which won its first boys state championship since 1990, and fourth in school history.

“They’re just a really solid team,” said Lynx Coach Mike Wood. “They can all shoot, they can all handle. They did a great job. One of the best teams we’ve played all year. I give them credit.”

Eric Rippetoe added 17 points for the Lynx (25-5) and hit a 3-pointer with 6:17 to play to make it 58-47, but Cornell answered with a 3-point shot of his own to push the lead back to 14.

Incline jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead, and Lincoln could just not catch up. “We had our chances,” Wood said, “but it seemed every time we’d make a bucket, they’d make a bucket, we couldn’t get a stop and it (Incline’s lead) would just stay around six or eight. We just never could get it rolling.”

Besides Walker and Rippetoe, only two other Lynx players scored, Bruce Condie with four and Chandler Katschke with two.

Walker scored 40 or more points for the second straight game, but after hitting seven 3-pointers in the semi-final win over Rite of Passage on Friday, he made just 2 of 14 tries against Incline.

Walker’s total of 84 points, usually when facing two defenders, in two games at state set a new tournament record. The old 2A tournament record was 69 set by Virgin Valley’s Danny Brotherson in three games in 1994.

Interestingly, Dantley’s uncle, Kyle Walker, holds the 3A tournament scoring record of 100 points in three games with Moapa Valley in 1988.

Lincoln Coach Mike Wood said he wanted to personally thank all of the fans, cheerleaders, and supporters who made the long trip to Reno to follow the Lynx teams regardless of the outcome.
