Lincoln County’s Larry Shinkle, Jr. 2006-2007 Joseph Scafidi Pound-for-Pound Award Winner

By Dave Maxwell

Just graduated Lincoln County High School senior Larry Shinkle, Jr., is not tall of stature, yet at 5-foot-3 and 130 pounds, he is not short when it comes to heart, desire and competitiveness, as attested by his accomplishments on the athletic field.

This past school year, Larry was also perhaps the Southern 2A’s top-all around athlete, regardless of size.

As a result, Shinkle has been named the sixth winner of the Joseph Scafidi Pound-for-Pound Award as announced this week by Chuck Hildebrand of NevadaPrep.com.

The award honors Joseph Scafidi, a Reno High freshman who died along with his older brother Daniel in a vehicle accident in December 2001.

Shinkle, who has accepted an academic scholarship to Southern Utah University, receives a $1,000 grant as part of the award.

Larry was a member of the LCHS football, basketball and track teams during his high school career.

Even though he stands but 5-3, he convinced Lynx football coach Rich Ottley to let him play quarterback late in last year’s football season. Shinkle helped the team win their last seven games, after a 0-4 start, and led them to victories in the 2A state playoffs over West Wendover and a double-overtime semi-final win over Yerington, before losing in the 2A state finals to powerful Right of Passage.

He also was a starting point guard on the Lynx basketball team, helping them to the 2A state finals game where they lost to four-time-defending state champion The Meadows.

At the Southern 2A finals in track, he was second in the pole vault, third in the 4x100 meter relay, fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump, and went on to place seventh in the pole vault at the 2A state meet.

Shinkle accomplished all of this while maintaining a grade-point average of 3.5, which qualified him for the Southern Utah University academic scholarship.

He follows Hug’s Martin Trovela (2002), Mountain View’s Shedrick McClenton (2003), Douglas’ Stormy Herald (2004), Elko’s Dominick Robertson (2005), and Spring Creek’s Bryce Saddoris last year as the Pound-for-Pound winner.
