Obituary Notice
for
Franklin Frederick Ernst
November 30, 1914 - July 1, 2008

Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend peacefully passed away July 1, 2008 in Orem, UT. He was born to Sarah Louisa Talcott and Clarence Andrew Ernst in Nazareth, PA, on November 30, 1914. At the age of 5, Frank’s family returned home to Unionville, NV, where he attended school in Nevada’s oldest one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Pershing County High School and attended one year at John Brown University, a Christian university at Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was assigned to work in the Castleton mine for the war effort. Frank is the last of the soldier miners. During WWII, he met his sweetheart, Catherine Hunt Mathews, widow of Earl Mathews of Panaca. Frank and Catherine married in 1943 and they called Panaca their home for the remainder of their lives. Frank helped Catherine raise the Mathews children and four of their own. He proudly called this, his “3-in-1” family.

Frank retired from the Castleton mine in 1984. His titles included “first class” hoistman, chief electrician and master mechanic. He was a member of the LDS Church. Frank and Catherine’s marriage was solemnized in the St. George Temple in 1970. They served an LDS mission to Bernalillo, NM in 1987-1988. Frank served as a Lions Club president, justice of the peace, and volunteer fire department member, scoutmaster, on the local Fish and Game board and in various church callings. He was the first male president of the Panaca PTA. Many a time Dad was called on to help others and was always willing to help. Dad was very creative in solving mechanical problems and was considered a technical genius. Dad grew a wonderful garden and shared with the widows and those who were sick or in need.

Frank is survived by his sister, May Mello, his children, Myrna Harbaugh (Leroy), Alma Ernst (Jackie), Sarah Matkin (Ron), Tim Ernst (Venus), Neldon Mathews (Carol), Edna Guymon (Richard), DeRita Mathews, Joyce Forman, Janice Bentley (Robert), and over 150 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers, by his wife Catherine, step-sons: Leslie Mathews, Wesley Mathews (Toby), Jonathan Mathews, Douglas Mathews and son-in-law Lyle Forman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the Panaca LDS chapel at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends may call on Friday evening July 4th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm or Saturday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the LDS mission fund or a charity of your choice.
